Since 1981, Safeplace, a nonprofit organization that has domestic violence programs in northwest Alabama, continues to provide free services to victims and their children from Colbert, Franklin, Lauderdale, Lawerence, Marion, and Winson Counties. The mission of Safe Place, Inc. is to break the cycle of violence and domestic abuse by providing crisis intervention, housing, counseling, and referral services for survivors, and to educate the community in order to prevent future abuse. To facilitate a coordinated community response to abused persons through networking with other service providers, the criminal justice system, elected officials, civic leaders, and policy makers. Safe Place provides different sheltering services such as emergency housing, supportive housing, case management, children's services, safety planning and transitional housing.
The Muscle Shoals Police Department has partnered with Safeplace. If you are involved in a domestic violence situation and you need leave, you can contact Safeplace about needed shelter and/or escape. Then the Muscle Shoals Police Department can give you a ride the Safeplace. You can also come to Muscle Shoals Police Department and we can get you in contact with Safeplace.
The Muscle Shoals Police department is also a drop off place for donations such as Paper Products, Hygiene Supplies, Cleaning Supplies, Washing Detergent, Backpacks for children, School Supplies for the children.
Safeplace Services:
- Legal Advocacy: Attorney services for protection from abuse orders, emergency child custody, divorces and other civil issues.
- Court Advocacy: A Safeplace Advocate can go with you to court so it's not so frightening and help find your way around the court system. A Safeplace Advocate can help you decide if you need and want a Protection From Abuse Order and explain the process.
- Counseling Services: Counseling can help you navigate the various stages of escape, healing, and rebuilding.
- Safe Housing: A safe and welcoming place to sleep where nobody can hurt you or your children, plus many other services to help you obtain safe housing, and support yourself and your family.
- Affordable Housing: Single-family homes with rental and utility assistance for up to 18 months with additional support such a child care and minor car repair.
- Rental and Utility Assistance with security and deposits and up to 6 months of rental assistance in a place you choose to live.
- Relocation Assistance can help you get moved in town or out-of-town.
- Hispanic Liaison Services: The Hispanic Liaisons work with Spanish-speaking clients to provide all of Safeplace services in Spanish.
- Support Group: Seven weekly community support groups are available in Colbert, Franklin, Marion, Lauderdale, and Lawerence County. The groups are also a wonderful support for people working to stabilize their lives after victimization. The Spanish-speaking groups meet in Franklin and Lauderdale Counties.
- Learning to be a Kid (LBK): Learning to Be a Kid is for children ages 2-5 who have experienced domestic violence. The program is Monday through Friday, for four hours each day. LBK incorporates individual and group counseling and focuses on building resilience in children who have lived in homes where domestic violence has been happening.
- Counseling for Kids: Individual counseling for children ages three and up who have experienced domestic violence.
- Transportation Assistance in the form of NACOLG passes, NARCOG (Lawerence), taxi cab, mileage reimbursement, or by Safeplace staff and volunteers.
- Prescription Assistance to help pay for non-controlled medications.
