MUSCLE SHOALS LIVING CENTER and OUTREACH PROGRAM

If you are sixty years of age or older and young at heart, the Living Center is for you! Established in 1983, the center began with a small room located in the Muscle Shoals Recreation Center. In 1988 the seniors moved into a new building, the Frank G. Little Senior Center, next door to what is now Gym 3. It was originally named in memory of Frank G. Little who served as a long-time City Clerk of Muscle Shoals for 22 years.

The Muscle Shoals Living Center is managed by Janet C. Nichols and offers weekly fellowship and activities for senior adults. Seniors may participate in games of Bingo, a penny Auction, cards, puzzles or a friendly game of pool.

For those who prefer to participate in non-competitive activities, the center offers ceramics classes, a reading area, and periodic art and craft classes. Our exercise program is led by a trained instructor and is offered for those who desire a type of physical activity. Educational programs on topics such as nutrition, depression, stress, safety and other health topics are scheduled monthly at the center.

Social and other special events are also planned throughout the year including ice cream socials, picnics at the Tennessee River, music, a Hawaiian Luau, a cookout and holiday parties. Monthly group trips out to local restaurants and other outings are planned Spring through Fall months.

The Muscle Shoals Living Center partners with the Northwest Alabama Council of Local Governments (NACOLG) to offer many programs to the senior adults of our city, assisting them with various needs and enabling them to remain independent for as long as possible. The Living Center Elderly Nutrition Program through NACOLG and the Alabama Dept. of Senior Services provides seniors with nutritious lunch meals at the Center five days a week for a $1.00 donation. The menus for these meals are prepared by as Alabama state licensed dietitian. For those senior adults who may qualify for the service, the center offers a home-bound lunch program. This program allows those who are unable to visit the center to receive a well-balanced meal in their home. *This is a different service from Community Action Meals on Wheels. These meals are prepared by Trio Foods and are delivered daily to the Center.

The center provides a shuttle service for those who may need transportation to and from the center. Our bus is equipped with a full service electric wheelchair lift to accommodate those unable to climb 3-4 steps safely. Should you need transportation services, you may contact Janet Nichols, Living Center Manager at 256-386-9280 to discuss and make arrangements.

The Center members conduct their annual Ceramics Fundraiser each year beginning in August to benefit the activities and programs for the members to enjoy such as Bingo, the Christmas Party, cookout, other games and events for members. Hand-painted by the members, they create Nativity scenes, snowmen, trains, nightlights, team items and, of course, many styles of lighted ceramic custom trees you can’t get anywhere else. Many can be seen on their Facebook page. Check us out at: https://www.facebook.com/search/top?q=muscle%20shoals%20senior%20living%20center

Another favorite event among our senior adults is the Masters Games of Alabama. These Games are held locally in various State Districts in the Summer. The winners at the District levels go on to compete at the State level held in different cities each year. The seniors have the opportunity to exhibit their skills and strengths in many games of competition which include:

  • Basketball Free Throw
  • Billiards-8 Ball
  • Bowling
  • Cornhole
  • Dominoes-Single
  • Dominoes-Double

The Muscle Shoals Living Center also offers an Outreach Program to the senior adults of our city. The Outreach Program was created to assist senior adults with various needs, enabling them to remain independent for as long as possible. Linda Troutt, Outreach Coordinator, assists with identifying programs designed to help elderly persons. Because many senior adults are physically unable to visit the center, Linda initially visits in the home of the individual to evaluate their needs and see if they qualify for the homebound lunch program. Then, follows up quarterly to see how they are doing and if their needs have changed. She can refer those in need to NACOLG for services. If you need the services of the NACOLG or the Homebound meal program, you may contact Linda Troutt, Outreach Coordinator.
