Safeplace Link

Safeplace Inc., is one of nineteen domestic violence shelters serving the victims of abuse in the state of Alabama. These shelter programs join together to form the Alabama Coalition Against Domestic Violence. Safeplace was commissioned to serve the counties of Colbert, Franklin, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Marion and Winston.

Safeplace opened at the beginning of the social reformation concerning family violence in 1981. At that time is was supported and staffed by concerned citizens who saw the need and rose to the challenge. On that first opening day in June, the twelve available beds were filled. Since that time, with the help of federal and state funding, independent grants and community contributions, coupled with blood, sweat and tears, Safeplace has grown to a 40 bed facility offering services far beyond what could be provided in those early years.

Programs include not only shelter and counseling for families homeless due to domestic violence, but also outreach programs such as court advocacy services, prevention education programs and batterers intervention programs. Safeplace also has a transitional housing program to serve victims in our most rural areas.

Most recently, staff and board members met the challenge to create a new vision and goal for the program. The new vision is to live in a world where family and intimate partner violence does not exist.
