Sites and Attractions

The Shoals Area has numerous sites and attractions that guests to our area will want to enjoy.  Although there are numerous places to visit, we have listed some of the more popular tourist attractions.

1.   Ivy Green - Ivy Green is the home of Helen Keller and  something  that all seventh grade students will  study.  Helen Keller is America's "First Lady  of Courage."  Her memory is kept alive at her birthplace, and 1820's cottage which has been completely restored and dedicated to this courageous lady who became an international symbol of hope.  For information call (256) 383-4006.

2.   Wilson Dam - Wilson Dam is one of the single highest lift locks in the world.  An overlook allows visitors the rush of waters flowing through the locks and a spectacular view of the barges and other crafts moving through the lock.  For more information call (256) 314-8150.

3.   U.S. Space and Rocket Center - The U.S. Space and Rocket Center is a place the entire Family will want to visit while in North Alabama.  The Space Center has an incredible display of artifacts from our National Space Program from hands-on interactive exhibits to space travel simulators, the Space and is unlike any other.  While visiting, everyone will want to ride the Space Shot, the motion based simulator that blasts you 180 feet in the air with four G's of force.  During the tournament we will take two trips to the Space and Rocket Facility which is located fifty miles from the Sportsplex.  For information, call 1-800-62-space.

4.   W.C. Handy Home - W.C. Handy is the "Father of the Blues" and his birthplace is in the Shoals.  His home has been restored and now houses some of the original musical instruments and original manuscripts from some of his most famous works.  For more information call (256) 760-6343.

5.   Shiloh National Military Park - The Shiloh National Military Park, for
 any Civil War or History enthusiast will be a must.  Shiloh National Military Park is located only forty-five minutes away and is the site of one of the largest battles of the Civil War.  The Park is filled with history, artifacts, a fill presentation, and numerous other interesting sites and attractions.  For more information please call (731) 689-5696.

6.   Alabama Music Hall of Fame - The Alabama Music Hall of Fame is located on Highway 72 in Tuscumbia, this building is the home of some of the states finest music exhibits.  In addition, tourists may even record their own CD.  For more information call (256) 383-4417.

7.   Coon Dog Cemetery - The Coon Dog Cemetery is the burial grounds for over two hundred of the worlds most famous coon dogs.  This is the site of the only coon dog cemetery in the world.  For more information call (256) 383-0783.

8.   Tennessee Valley Arts Center - The Tennessee Valley Arts Center is  a permanent exhibit of aboriginal art.  Also, during the Month of August the center will have on display a collection of multi media artworks by local artists.  For more information call (256) 383-0533.
